The History of Afternoon Tea
Afternoon Tea - a moment above everyday life
Duchess Anna
The tradition of English afternoon tea can be attributed to Duchess Anna, the Duchess of Bedford and a lady-in-waiting to Queen Victoria. When the Duchess felt hungry in the afternoons and a light lunch wasn't sufficient until dinner, she would request tea and a small snack from her servants. Soon, the Duchess began inviting her friends for tea at five o'clock, and this afternoon moment with tea and pastries became a popular social activity among friends in the mid-19th century. The tea gathering quickly gained popularity among the upper classes and remains a distinctive feature of British culture even in the 21st century.
The Earl of Sandwich's Sandwich
Around the same time in the 18th century, the Earl of Sandwich (John Montagu), known for his indulgence in gambling, would often play cards without taking meal breaks. He would ask his servants to bring him something to eat that he could consume while playing. A clever solution was invented in the kitchen: a slice of roast meat placed between two triangular-cut slices of bread. This way, his hands wouldn't get messy, and he didn't have to interrupt the game for a meal. The Earl of Sandwich's passion for gambling gave birth to a new type of sandwich.
